Ubuntu won't boot after upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10: D-Bus problem?

I was upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10 when the ability to move my windows disappeared. I did a hard reset and tried some dpkg --configure command lines to carry on the upgrade. I got some messages about read-only filesystems that makes me think one of my disks has an error and is remounting as read-only. My Ubuntu is installed into an encrypted partition. Now I cannot boot into Ubuntu at all. The system hangs after I enter my password. I have managed to boot into a LiveCD and mount the partition by following the instructions here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=940904. AFAICT from the mounted /var/log/syslog the D-Bus won't start. My machine is a Lenovo W530 and I know some people have had problems with the Nvidia Optimus drivers. What can I do to fix my machine?

Here is a hopefully relevant part of my syslog:

Slow boot time since upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10
  • danh28

I have tried for quite a while now to reduce my boot time, disabled some startup items, removed packages that were causing crashes after boot, removed ureadahead pack files, reinstalled ureadahead, uninstalled ureadahead and installed e4rat....and nothing has made that much difference. e4rat made the biggest difference with a reduction of a few seconds but my boot time is still around 80 seconds.

    Can anyone help?

It seems to be getting worse over time, maybe with each successive boot.

I had a similar problem which in my case seems to have been something to do with Ubuntu waiting for a IPv6 response from the router, which was disabled on the router.

After I enabled it, the boot proceeded smoothly with only a 0.8 second delay rather than 20 seconds. May not be the same problem but it's only a few seconds to test and probably worth a go.
